I had a VHT Special 6 for a while. Great little amp with superb tone for harp. They sound just like a Blackface Champ. It was even better after doing the Jim Rossen mods to it and adding a line out. Here's Nic Clarke playing through a modded VHT Special 6

Train,
I've heard the same thing you said about the amp being one of the best stock, and yet easy to mod. I can do my own mods so I thought it might be a good choice for me.

I've read about mods to the tone stack (just changing R's and C's) and maybe a preamp tube swap. What mods did you do to yours?

As far as speakers go, the combo has a 4ohm, 8ohm, and 16ohm jack on the back making it very easy to connect it up to speaker cabs. If I get one I'll probably add a line out (XLR balanced) so that it can be easily to connected up to the PA in a setting where the amp alone is not loud enough and a speaker cab is not available.
I have big ears. I hear them changes before they get to me.   - Pinetop Perkins -

As long as were talking amps ...

I know certain guys have their sound. We can all recognize Jason or Adam's sounds immediately for example. But I really believe you can sound good through anything. When I played bass for the Joe Lee Bush band, Joe Lee blew harp through a tiny 1980's radio Shack solid state amp with a vocal mic and sounded fantastic. He could get a real Chicigo sound, or a big west cost sound. It was all him though - not the rig.

Saturday night I played a gig with an SM57 right into the PA. The only thing I did was have them roll off the highs and boost the bass. I think it sounded great and even had another harp player ask me what I was playing through. He was surprised it was the PA. Its all us - the gear is secondary.

Kingly,
Who is the guy in the video? He's sounds pretty good.

It's Nic Clarke. He's about 17 years old now I think. Huge tone and some serious chops.

On my VHT I just added a line out using one of the external speaker jack sockets and changed some resistors. It made a huge difference to what was already a good amp.

I agree about it all coming from us. I quite often play through an SM57 straight into the PA. I'm always happy with the tone I get from it.

Jim

I have done a number of mods to a few of my amps changing resistors and capacitors. Even put a feedback control from the transformer for presence. I really came close to replacing the transformers which would have been much better in quality tone but then I would have more than doubled the cost of the whole amp. By then, your wondering if you should have put the money into a better amp in the 1st place.

If you have not had your hands on the VHT Special Six yet, you are in for a very happy surprise. It sounds awesome from the first try. Convenience mods like line outs are handy. And changing your tone stack tailors your preferences. But like I said in the post above, trying different speakers and combinations far more enhances tone than most mods you can do on the circuit.

Take the plunge and try different speaker elements and mix and match. It is the most you can do to change your amps character.

Train,
Someone has a VHT special 6 locally on Craigslist for $175. I offered them $150 ... hopefully they'll accept and I'll pick it up tonight.

If I add a line out I'll use a transformer and an XLR connector so its a low-Z output to make it easy to connect to the PA - no direct box required.

Does this amp benefit from a tube swap? Maybe 12AY7 instead of 12AX7?

The VHT Special 6 doesn't need any tube swaps at all. If you really want change any then the best thing is to upgrade to a JJ Tesla 6V6 and either a good NOS 12AX7 or a 5751.

Dang, I just listened to Kingleys video ....
that is the best sounding affordable little amp for that style /tone, I have ever heard,,,

breaks up smoothly and warmly , adding low harmonics and body without edgey  irritating high harmonics and  out of tune odd harmonic "wolf tones"

Imho it sounds Better than a Harpgear at 1/3 the price of the HG...

I am not really into that tone for myself,, but I recognize it is the most popular
and that amp is one of the few I have heard produce it without being grating and too edgy with too much overhang and ring..

Short of buying a Sonny Junior for ten times the price,,
I think this little box may be the Golden Chalice so many seek,

curse all of you for reactivating my  amplifier jones

you are going to get me divorced !!!!

most tube amps work better for harp by swapping the higher gain Ax7 for an AU7 or similar lower gain preamp tube as ,--- particularly if they have a separate  "Pre" Gain control,,----
